They're the same job with different names. "Punch clock" is the North American term, from the days of card machines. "Clocking in system" is what UK businesses call it. A time clock app does what both did, on devices you already own: employees clock in from their phone, a tablet at the door, or even a landline, and every punch lands in one timesheet, timestamped and ready for payroll.
Five ways, and you can mix them across one team. From their own phone, with optional GPS confirmation. From a shared tablet at the entrance, set up as a punch or clock in kiosk with PIN or facial recognition. From a computer, for office and remote staff. Each punch is matched to the schedule, so a 9:04 clock-in against a 9:00 shift is flagged before payroll, not after.
Buddy punching is when one employee clocks in for another, usually to cover a late arrival. It's the most common form of time theft, and card machines can't catch it: any hand can stamp a card. Timetastic's Rota and Time Clock stops it at the punch. Facial recognition on the kiosk confirms the person clocking in is the person on the schedule, and GPS confirmation checks they're actually on site. No confrontation, no reviewing footage. The clock in either verifies or it doesn't.
Time theft is being paid for time not worked: buddy punching as explained above, stretched breaks, early clock-ins, rounded-up hours. In most cases it's a disciplinary matter rather than a criminal one, in both the US and the UK, though falsifying records can cross into fraud. The real cost isn't legal, it's quiet: a few minutes per shift, across a team, across a year, adds up to weeks of paid time nobody worked.
